How to Format College Personal Statements

Almost all college applications require prospective students to write a personal statement. Although the personal statement should be unique and creative, it is important that students follow the formatting instructions that are requested by the college or university they are applying to. If students do not pay attention to these formatting requirements, they may find that their applications are rejected before the admissions committee even looks at the application.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand the college's unique rules and requirements for personal statements. Some colleges have very specific requirements for how they want you to format a personal statement, and you should always stick to your school's guidelines.

    • 2

Determine your audience by researching the school you are interested in. Format your personal statement in a very professional and strict form if the school seems highly academic or serious. Choose to get creative with your format if the school values creativity.

    • 3

Title your personal statement. Make sure your title represents your personal statement as a whole, as well as you as a person. It should short and to the point.

    • 4

Double space your personal statement to allow the admissions committee to more easily read and understand your personal statement.

    • 5

Finish your personal statement with a salutation such as "Sincerely" in order to give it a personal feel.
