How to Convert a College Curriculum From the Quarter System to the Semester System

The quarter units earned for the completion of one class is higher than those offered for the completion of the same class on a semester calendar. Colleges and universities on the quarter system divide their calendar into three sessions. Each session, students must take two to three classes to earn full-time status. On a semester calendar, students must take four classes to earn full-time status. When transferring from a school on a quarter system to a semester calendar, the quarter units earned from transferable classes are converted to semester units to get the total units earned.

Instructions

    • 1

Look on your transcript for the number of quarter units earned per class.

    • 2

Total the number of quarter units for a specific class or total earned for all classes completed.

    • 3

Multiply the number of quarter units by 2/3, or divide them by 1.5. For example, 33 quarter units x 2/3 = 22 semester units, or 33/1.5 = 22.
