Understanding the structure and systems of the body is an essential step to understanding how physical therapy helps patients heal. Anatomy and physiology coursework provides students with the knowledge of human body systems and structures needed for safely performing exercises and stretching movements with patients. Laboratory exercises allow students to examine the muscular system and skeletal and tissue structures, allowing students to connect physical therapy concepts to the structures and functions of the body.
Mathematics provides a strong foundation for coursework in physical therapy. Coursework in algebra covers topics including simplifying expressions, evaluating and solving equations and inequalities, and graphing linear and quadratic functions and relations. Students will use measuring instruments and calculators in practical situations. In addition, algebra concepts will help students interpret data and statistics as well as succeed in science and physical therapy courses required in the associate degree program.
Physical therapy assistants must be able to communicate successfully with patients while assisting with exercises and relaying program instructions. In addition, assistants will need to provide physical therapists with written and oral patient reports. Courses in English will provide students with the skills to organize, research and report information clearly and concisely. Students will develop skills in conflict resolution and listening while taking an interpersonal communication course. Public speaking courses will give students the tools necessary for clearly presenting information and communicating instructions to patients, family members and physical therapists.
Understanding the social and emotional effects of illness and injuries will help physical therapy assistants empathize with patients. Students will study the behaviors and personality of people while completing coursework in psychology. Sociology coursework will enhance the student’s understanding of culture and social norms. Students will develop the skills and tools to deal with difficult patients in a proactive manner to avoid conflicts and to create a positive environment within the physical therapy facility.
