What Are the Admission Requirements of the Academy of Art University

Ever dream of attending a school to master an art? Consider one of the most recognized art schools in the world, the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
(Visit the school's site, www.academyart.edu for more information on their programs.) The school offers rolling admissions, so you can apply when you are ready. If the school believes you are a good fit for their program based on your high school transcript and application, you will receive an offer of admission, good for two years.
  1. Undergraduate Admissions for U.S. Students

    • In order to be considered for admission, a prospective student must submit an official, sealed copy of the high-school transcript or GED, an application form and an application fee of $100. Students may also submit samples of their work in a portfolio if they wish to skip beginner's courses.

    Undergraduate Admissions for International Students

    • Foreign students interested in being admitted must submit an application form, official transcripts and an application fee of $100. In addition, the school requires foreign students to submit a non-refundable tuition deposit of $500, an affidavit of support, an official bank letter that states the student has at least $36,000, a photocopy of their passport and TOEFL score.

    Graduate Admissions for U.S. Students

    • The graduate programs at the Academy require prospective students to send in a resume, official college transcripts, statement of intent and a portfolio for class placement. Double-check requirements for your desired program. Some departments, like Motion Pictures and Television, require letters of recommendation for admission.

    Graduate Admissions for Foreign Students

    • International applicants need to send the admissions office all of the same documents that are required of domestic graduate applicants, along with a $500 nonrefundable tuition deposit upon admission, an affidavit of support, an original bank letter, a photocopy of their passport and TOEFL scores.

    Transfer Students

    • If a student has earned credits from another university or from an advanced placement test, these credits can be applied toward a degree at the academy. General education courses will most likely transfer (if a similar course is offered) and if official transcripts and test scores are sent to the university in order to obtain credit.

Foreign students who wish to transfer from another school to the academy must complete a transfer evaluation form if they previously obtained an F-1 visa. The former school has to release the student from SEVIS before the academy can issue the student an I-20. Students also need to send their current I-20 to the academy, as well as their official transcripts from their previous school. The university requires foreign transcripts to be translated into English.

    Home-school students

    • Students who did not attend a public or private high school are required to complete an application form and the application fee of $100. The student will be expected to submit their transcript and a signed home-school program certificate of completion, which is the equivalent of a high school diploma.
