The MLA style sets rules about format, style and citations in articles and academic papers. Succinct citations and plain language set it apart from other bibliographic styles such as Chicago, which is also used in humanities and history, and APA, which is usually used in the social sciences. The header begins your paper by setting out a few facts.
Begin by setting a 1-inch border around your page. Your full name, your instructor's name, the name of the course and the due date of the paper will be left-justified and double-spaced at the top of your paper. Your first and last name, along with a page number, should appear at the top of each subsequent page.
Consult with your professor prior to handing in your assignment to make sure you have properly adhered to the specifications. Confirm that your header is laid out in the manner set out above, and ask if there are any other requirements for your paper to meet MLA style.
