Instructions

  1. Apply

    • 1

Research schools that offer doctorates in your major. Look for professors who are performing research in your field of interest. Narrow down the choices to about 10 or 15 schools.

    • 2

Contact the department chairs at your chosen schools. Email them pertinent questions related to the program. Develop a rapport with department administrators and professors so they will remember you when it comes time to apply. Start this process early, at least several months before you apply.

    • 3

Prepare your applications. Order official transcripts and ask your professors to write letters of recommendation. Make sure to give your professors plenty of time to write the letters.

    • 4

Write your personal statement. Schools will often give you a topic to write about. Make sure that the statement is clearly written and on topic. Have a friend or professor proofread the statement for you.

    • 5

Complete your applications. Mail them in early. Applying early gives you a better chance of being accepted.
