Complete the application process for the department of choice. Many applications must be accompanied by an entrance essay. Outline a potential course schedule per semester, once accepted into the PhD program, to balance career responsibilities, family life and attaining the advanced degree.
Schedule doctorate-level classes. Pass each course with a "C" or higher, in most college or university programs. Check with the doctoral department for any differences in requirements.
Prepare for, take and pass the comprehensive exams, also called "orals," coinciding with the program of study. Grading of the tests is usually done by a small group of department heads and faculty.
Identify an area of interest for a doctoral dissertation. Research and assemble the scholarly thesis, which often requires many years of preparation.
Present a dissertation draft to the department committee and take note of improvement suggestions. Rework the advanced thesis for a final draft.
Submit the final draft of the dissertation to a committee, and defend the research conducted. Field questions with appropriate and scholarly responses about the thesis, research and conclusions drawn from the information.
Apply for graduation from the PhD program and attend the ceremony, if applicable. Receive the Certificate of Completion, for proof of success.
