It has taken two related areas, "Modeling and Optimization" and "Probability and Stochastic Systems" and combined them into one Ph.D program. MIT has a well-reputed Ph.D. program that is offered in its Operations Research Center. The Center is actually a collection of faculty members from eight different departments in various schools. Doctoral candidates are expected to "contribute to advanced research and state-of-the-art knowledge in a selected field," according to the OR Center.

Georgia Tech's School of Industrial and Systems Engineering has a very strong Ph.D. program, with a unique feature in that it offers six different concentrations for each prospective candidate to choose from. The fields of concentration in OR are: optimization, stochastic systems, supply chain engineering, economic decision analysis, applied statistics and concentration in algorithms, combinatorics, and optimization.
