Operations Research Ph.D. Programs

Operations research involves the use of advanced mathematical and analytical techniques to aid decision-making. In order to gain expertise in OR, a graduate degree (either master's or a Ph.D.) is the standard practice. As of 2010, there are more than 50 universities in the U.S. that offer a doctoral program in operations research. Among these 50, some of the schools have earned a reputation for offering excellent Ph.D. programs.
  1. Stanford University

    • At Stanford University, the Department of Management Science and Engineering offers a Ph.D program in OR. It has taken two related areas, "Modeling and Optimization" and "Probability and Stochastic Systems" and combined them into one Ph.D program. Prospective students must choose optimization, operations research or stochastics as their major of choice when applying.

    Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • MIT has a well-reputed Ph.D. program that is offered in its Operations Research Center. The Center is actually a collection of faculty members from eight different departments in various schools. Doctoral candidates are expected to "contribute to advanced research and state-of-the-art knowledge in a selected field," according to the OR Center.

    Georgia Institute of Technology

    • Georgia Tech's School of Industrial and Systems Engineering has a very strong Ph.D. program, with a unique feature in that it offers six different concentrations for each prospective candidate to choose from. The fields of concentration in OR are: optimization, stochastic systems, supply chain engineering, economic decision analysis, applied statistics and concentration in algorithms, combinatorics, and optimization.
