What does PhD habil mean?
"PhD habil" refers to a habilitation which is a post-doctoral qualification awarded in some European countries (particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, and parts of Western Europe). It's not a direct equivalent of a PhD, but rather a higher academic qualification demonstrating advanced research competence and teaching ability usually beyond the level of a PhD. It often involves presenting a significant body of research (often encompassing several publications) and a public lecture or defense of a thesis, often on a significant body of work undertaken since the awarding of the PhD. After successfully completing the habilitation, an individual often gains the right to supervise doctoral students and might attain a professorship or equivalent academic rank.
