Information on the MGI Bill

The Montgomery G.I. Bill (MGIB) is the main educational benefit available to qualified active duty service members, reservists and veterans of the U.S. armed forces. The benefit is paid to qualified recipients in the form of monthly payments that are to be used for college or trade school tuition, supplies and related expenses.
  1. Qualifications

    • Veterans and members of the military qualify for the MGIB if the service member has served at least two years of active duty, graduated from high school or received a GED certificate, and had military pay reduced by at least $100 a month for the first 12 months of active duty.

    Amount

    • During the 2009 to 2010 school year, full-time students with an enlistment of three years or more using the MGIB qualified for $1,368 a month for up to 36 months. Benefit funds are pro-rated for students attending less than full time. MGIB rates increase each year on Oct. 1.

    How To Apply

    • Active military members and veterans can apply for the MGIB by locating a school that provides U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs-approved educational programs. Qualified students then should submit the Application for Education Benefits, VA Form 22-1990, to the VA Regional Processing Office.
