What Is Considered Full Time for GI Bill Purposes?

Under the post-9/11 GI bill and other similar bills, The Department of Veterans Affairs provides benefits to veterans and active duty personnel to participate in post-secondary education. It is important to understand the eligibility requirements, such as the definition of full-time student status.
  1. Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL)

    • Through the IHL benefit, full-time status is considered 12 or more credit hours at a four-year university or community college. For veterans pursuing graduate degrees, however, full-time status is determined by the college. Veterans can also attend multiple institutions to achieve full-time status.

    Co-Op Training

    • Available through GI bills other than the Post-9/11 Bill, co-op benefits enable veterans to attend school while working. This is often accomplished through a partnership between a school program and an employer in that same field. Under this type of program, veterans are considered full-time students for benefit purposes.

    Certification and Licensure

    • In addition to attending school, the GI Bills will reimburse veterans and active-duty personnel for the cost of licensing and certification exams. Instead of determining the benefit based on full-time or part-time status, the GI Bill will pay for the test in full up to $2,000.
