Scholarships for Kids of Single Parents

Single-parent families often struggle to make ends meet, so being able to afford college tuition may seem out of reach. Fortunately, there are organizations that provide scholarships to children of single parents. Requirements for such scholarships vary but often will rely on the reason for the family situation, particularly if it is because a parent passed away.
  1. Foresters

    • Foresters is a life insurance provider that offers numerous benefits and activities to its members. The company's interest in providing for the well-being of families has led to the creation of scholarships for children of a deceased parent. The parent must have been a Foresters member at the time of death. Scholarship amounts range from $1,000 to $3,000 per year. Funds are renewable for up to four years or until the child receives a degree.

    Research Foundation of CFA Institute

    • The Research Foundation of CFA Institute is a non-profit organization aimed at helping provide research to practitioners worldwide. The organization offers the 11 September Memorial Scholarship Fund to children who lost a parent in the Sept. 11 attacks. Applicants must be enrolled part time or full time pursuing an undergraduate degree in finance, economics, accounting or business. Scholarship amounts will vary by financial need, but recipients are eligible to receive up to $25,000 for a period of five years. CFA will determine the scholarship winners based on academic achievements, leadership and participation in the school and community.

    Raise the Nation

    • Raise the Nation is a nonprofit organization that provides financial support to single mothers. The organization's goal is to help these women achieve independence for themselves and their family. For this reason, Raise the Nation offers the Child of a Single Parent Woman Scholarship. Children are eligible to receive this scholarship as long as they are claimed as a dependent of a single mother. Applicants are judged based on "personal development, community leadership or participation, and academic achievement." GPA is not required. There is a $20 application fee.

    Forgotten Dependents

    • Forgotten Dependents Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides scholarship funding to children who have lost a parent. Students must be U.S. citizens, unmarried and between the ages of 16 and 25. Applicants will have to provide a 500-word essay on their goals and objectives, high school or college transcripts, SAT/ACT results, letter of acceptance, copy of the parent's death certificate and one or two letters of reference. The annual deadline is April 1.
