Half time rates are paid to students who are enrolled in six to eight hours of coursework or are considered half time by the college or university. Under all qualifying GI bills, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs pays at the half time rate so long as you are covered under the selected bill.
You may select the GI bill that suits your needs. The Post 9/11 GI Bill allows for benefits, including coursework at half time rate, to be taken up to 15 years from a discharge date. The Montgomery GI Bill for Active Duty service members offers benefits for up to 10 years and the Montgomery GI Bill for Reservists provides compensation for 14 years, for eligible reservist armed forces members.
The GI bill benefit periods are not extended for former military members who have only taken courses half time. So long as entitlements are remaining and you have not reached the end of the benefit period, you may continue to take courses at the half time rate.
