How to Get a Javits Fellowship

The Jacob K. Javits Fellowship program honors students with exceptional academic ability. They are chosen based on their financial need, demonstrated achievement and outstanding promise. They must be just beginning their graduate study in humanities, arts or social sciences and plan to obtain their doctoral or masters degree.

      Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) electronically. It's required if you want to be considered for a Javits fellowship because you have to demonstrate financial need.

      Go online to read the requirements for the Javits fellowship. Download the application package (see Resources below).

      Fill out a hard copy of the application. You can't apply online.

      Submit one original and two photocopies of the Applicant Information Form, GRE scores if you have them, listing of honors and awards, transcripts Certification of Eligibility Form and Statement of Purpose. You must also include original art materials and letters of recommendation.

      Know that the decision will be made by a panel of experts appointed by the Javits Fellowship Board.

      Hand deliver or postmark your application packet by mid-October. Late submissions will not be accepted.

      Understand that a fellow receives the Javits fellowship annually for up to 48 months or until their degree is completed. The award is up to $30,000 with some money going to the institution and other going into a stipend for the student
