How to Get a Tuition Tax Credit Rebate

College students became eligible for a tax credit of up to $2,500 as part of a government stimulus package in 2009. Tax laws change, but the credit was still an option in 2011. The taxpayer must file a specific form with form 1040 or 1040A to request the tax credit.

Instructions

    • 1

Indicate on the tax return that you are currently a student.

    • 2

Keep records of all expenses related to college.

    • 3

Fill out form 8863, or the Education Credits (American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning Credits) form. To qualify for the tax rebate, you must be in school at least half time, make less than $80,000 per year, and have at least $2,500 of expenses not covered by scholarships.
