Make a list of local colleges and universities that offer continuing education or full degree programs that you're interested in. Many schools allow seniors to audit regular classes for free if space allows. This is a great way to get back into the job market, or improve skills or even meet friends. Once you have a list of schools, contact the financial aid departments at each and ask if they offer scholarships or tuition waivers for seniors.
Check out Elderhostel, a travel group for seniors that promotes and facilitates education along the way. Elderhostel tailors all of its programs to the needs and interests of senior citizens, and the organization does offer scholarships. So if you like to travel and learn as you go, this may be a great way to do both.
Investigate online coursework. If you are home-bound and like computer learning, you may find online courses with free tuition for seniors. Many technical colleges, continuing education programs and government institutions with affiliated research institutes offer online courses. If you locate something of interest, ask about free or reduced tuition for seniors.
Contact continuing education groups in your community that operate outside of the university system. Community centers, libraries and even some nonprofit groups offer coursework that may be free to seniors. If you find a class you like, contact the instructor and see if there are free opportunities for seniors in the class.
