At Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, the master in architecture program is an accredited professional degree suitable for those who have either completed the bachelor's degree with a non-design major or have a pre-professional undergraduate design major. The course of study teaches history, theory, technology, the social environment and professional practice. Design studio courses provide intensive study of design mastery. All students complete a design thesis as part of the program. The Harvard master of architecture program takes between five to seven to complete, depending on the student's previous educational achievements and practical experience.

A doctoral degree in architecture is a third option for students of architecture; it is available to those who already have either the bachelor of architecture, master of architecture or, in certain cases, another degree. The doctor of architecture or architectural doctorate is not a requirement to become a licensed architect, and at the moment there is only one accredited degree program for a doctor of architecture degree. The School of Architecture at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, offers the doctor of architecture program and has been accredited since 2001. The curriculum includes courses in design communication, world architecture, urbanism, sustainable systems and computer applications in architecture, in addition to many elective courses.
