Delineator Learning Style

A learning style is a preferred way of using one's abilities. Anthony Gregorc developed the Gregorc Style Delineator in response to learning patterns observed in brain hemisphere research. The Gregorc Style Delineator is sub-divided into four areas that describe how various individuals learn best: concrete sequential, abstract random, abstract sequential and concrete random.
  1. Concrete Sequential

    • According to Gregorc Learning Styles, the concrete sequential learner is an individual who learns through direct, hands-on activities. Furthermore, these learners are taught most effectively through highly detailed workbooks with diagrams, charts and other technical-based information.

    Abstract Random

    • The abstract random learner relies on group activities and community learning. These learners have proven to be highly effective when instructed by methods that allow a period of reflection, and they often use their emotions and relationship dynamics in learning. Suggested methods for these learners include listening to guest speakers, watching video clips, hearing about case studies and participating in education chat rooms.

    Abstract Sequential

    • The abstract sequential learner is the type of learner who learns for the sake of knowledge. These learners prefer well-organized material presented in a verbal, logical and analytical manner based on intellect. In addition, these learners are often skeptical of new information and will accept change only after spending time dissecting the information. The most effective instructional methods include reading, Internet searches, listening to audiotapes and attending lectures.

    Concrete Random

    • These learners excel in a competitive environment and are not afraid of failure, as they often experience periods of trial and error. They learn through intuitive breakthroughs through trial and error rather than from reading directions and participating in structured educational methods. The learning methods they respond most to are simulations, games and independent study programs.

    Purpose

    • According to Gregorc, the purpose and identification of these four learners within the Delineator learning style is to promote various methods for the educator to use to effectively instruct all types of learners, conforming lesson plans for all four types of learners.
