Requirements for a Psychology Degree of Counseling in AZ

The state of Arizona has a few options for students to obtain their degree in counseling; the requirements, however, vary between the institution and specificity of each program. Some programs require students to complete more credit hours than others while some have a higher requirement for students to maintain their grade point average (GPA).
  1. Prescott College

    • Prescott College has a Master of Arts degree program in counseling psychology and equine-assisted mental health. This program allows students to complete the program anywhere in the country by way of distance learning. Every three months, students are required to attend the colloquia on campus for three days at a time, twice per term. Students are required to complete a minimum of 40 credits to obtain their master's degree; students who seek licensure or certification in education or counseling must complete additional credits. During the first semester of study, students must complete a three-credit course in core foundations. Other required courses include relational horsemanship, facilitation for transformation, developmental needs, evolution of consciousness and explorations in equine-assisted learning.

    Arizona State University

    • Arizona State University has a Master of Counseling degree program that requires students to complete 60 credit hours within the program. Students who are admitted into the program typically have at least a 3.5 grade point average, and approximately 40 students are admitted into the program each year out of 150 applicants. Students will complete this program in no less than two years but no more than three years and are required to attend class on a full-time schedule. Students must choose between three emphasis areas, including the practitioner option, the research option and the school counselor option. Students are required to complete core courses which include theories of counseling and psychotherapy, prevention and consultation, psychological tests, professional issues and ethics, multicultural counseling and group dynamics and counseling.

    Northern Arizona University

    • Northern Arizona University has a Master of Arts in counseling program that requires students to complete 60 credit hours in order to obtain their degree. This program requires that students maintain a 3.0 grade point average for the courses they have previously taken as well as for the courses in the curriculum. Students cannot continue with the master's degree program if they have earned a C or below in more than six credit hours of graduate work. Students are required to take courses that include personality adjustment, theories of learning, cognitive processes and child psychology. Students must also take other required courses that include educational psychology applied to learning, adolescent psychology and adult psychology.
