Degree Requirements for a Computer Software Engineer

Computer software engineers are educated and trained to develop and design software. The degree requirements vary depending on whether a student is pursuing an associate degree or bachelor’s degree or a graduate-level, master’s degree. Job applicants have better success with at least a bachelor’s degree.

    • Cleveland Institute of Electronics has an Associate in Applied Science degree program in software engineering that is delivered in an online format. Degree requirements for this program include seven courses in the computer science engineering core which includes introduction to computers, software development lifecycle and operation systems; five courses in computer programming which includes programming with HTML, C programming language and visual basic; six courses in the general education category and two courses in the basic sciences. Other degree requirements include an introduction to sociology, applied ethics, technical writing and technical physics.

    Drexel University

    • Drexel University has a Bachelor of Science degree program in software engineering in which the degree requirements equate to 188 credits. Students must take four credits of university and college requirements which include career management and professional development and either the Drexel experience or seminar for transfer students. The software engineering requirements consist of 36 credits and include courses such as foundations of software engineering, software architecture and software evolution. Four courses must be completed in the computer science requirements, one course in the network elective category and three courses in the information systems requirements. Students also complete 18 credits in computing electives, 26 credits in mathematics and statistics, 21 credits in science sequence requirements and eight to nine credits of science electives. Eight courses in the arts and humanities category are required as well as two business courses and between 16 and 19 credits as free electives.

    Regis University

    • Regis University has a Master's of Science degree program in computer software engineering where students may complete the curriculum online or in the classroom. The total degree requirements are equal to 36 credit hours. Students have three core courses that need to be completed, which include information technology concepts, enterprise architecture and information technology research methods. Students are also required to complete object-oriented software engineering and 12 credits of elective courses. Elective courses include topics such as distributed systems, real-time systems and artificial intelligence. Nine credit hours of general electives are also required as well as a software engineering master thesis.
