Knowledge and training for VCU computer software education require engineers to complete several computer science courses, including basic programming, data structures, discrete structures, theory of computation, computer organization, operating systems, program design, algorithm analysis, programming languages as well as two or three upper-level courses in computer science. These courses will prepare engineering students with sufficient skill in using computer software in various disciplines.

Database software includes SQL server, DBS and Oracle and data conversion such as DBMS/copy, in addition to a great deal of other cutting-edge software. VCU software is designed to prepare students, graduates, businesses and institutions with the ability to work and solve problems in every aspect of the modern world.
The specially designed programs of VCU have elevated the institution to the pinnacle of interdisciplinary education. According to the Greater Richmond Partnership, an online report to the community, an annual Imagine Cup software design competition was won by an innovative team of VCU students. Teams involved in the contest were responsible for creating a mobile devices that eliminates people boundaries. The team of students won major awards for the software design of a tablet PC-based teaching tool for elementary education, the purpose of which was to improve writing instructions.
