According to the National Institute of Medical Herbalists in the United Kingdom, patients of medical herbalists have the opportunity to approach healing from a holistic viewpoint--by discussing emotional, spiritual and physical well being as a part of herbal treatment. Degrees in herbal medicine provide the medical herbalist practitioner with an in-depth knowledge of herbal medicines as well as traditional pharmaceutical practices and how both can work together to treat illnesses in the body. Practitioners also learn which combinations do not work so well together.

    • Middlesex University has a degree program in herbal medicine that begins in October of every year. Students can complete the program in three years on a full-time schedule or can opt to pursue the degree on a part-time schedule over the course of five years. This course teaches students how to view the body as a whole and examine how each part of the body affects another part. Courses include an introduction to complementary and alternative medicine, herbal therapeutics, nutrition and lifestyle management, approaches to research, professional skills development and professional practice management.

    The Scottish School of Herbal Medicine

    • The Scottish School of Herbal Medicine has a degree program in herbal medicine that teaches students the traditional approach as a way of life to herbal medicine. Throughout this program, students will have tasted over 150 herbs and develop an in-depth knowledge of each one. This program is designed to be completed in four years; over the first two years, students will study herbal science, physiology, pathology and anatomy. Upon graduation, students will receive their degree from the University of Wales. Throughout the course of the program, students participate in one five-day summer school session that takes place in August of each year. Students also participate in a total of 12 weekend teachings that take place between October and June on every third weekend. Courses include physiology and holistic health, nutrition and practical pharmacy, herbal therapeutics and differential diagnosis.

    • The Lincoln School of Health and Social Care at the University of Lincoln has an herbal medicine degree program that is designed to be completed in three years on a full-time schedule or five years on a part-time schedule. This program teaches students about the importance of herbs and its interactions with the human body and mind. Students train in the practice and principles of herbal medicine and also study the disciplines of physiology, anatomy, psychology, nutrition and pathology. Courses include an introduction to herbal medicine, anatomy and physiology, research methods, health psychology, therapeutic principles of herbal medicine, differential diagnosis and biochemistry for herbal medicine.
