Four Year Colleges With a Paralegal Degree

More than 260 American Bar Association (ABA)-approved paralegal studies programs are available throughout the United States. Most are offered by two-year colleges, business and proprietary schools, and four-year universities. There are also four-year colleges with ABA-approved paralegal studies programs in the Midwest and the Northeast.
  1. College of Mount St. Joseph

    • Founded in 1920 by the Sisters of Charity, the College of Mount St. Joseph offers an associate and bachelor degrees, and a post-degree certificate in paralegal studies. In addition to general education classes, required coursework for all three options includes introductory courses on paralegalism, legal principles, corporate law, real estate law, litigation procedures, estates and probates, and legal research as well as paralegal internship experience or paralegal co-op experience. A minor in legal studies is also available.

    Mercy College-Dobbs Ferry

    • Founded by the he Sisters of Mercy in 1950, Mercy College offers a bachelor of science in legal studies with a specialization in paralegal studies. In addition to general education requirements, students are required to take principles of management, introduction to legal studies, two legal research and writing courses, substantive law and document drafting, litigation and advanced seminar in paralegal studies. Mercy College also offers a bachelor of science in legal studies with a specialization in political science and a general bachelor of science in legal studies.

    New York City College of Technology

    • Established in 1946, the New York City College of Technology (City Tech) offers an associate in applied science and a bachelor of science degree. In addition to general education requirements, both paralegal studies degrees require introduction to paralegal studies, civil law and procedure, two legal research courses, real estate, estates, trusts and wills, family law, legal document preparation and legal internship and seminar. Additional required courses for a B.S. are legal technology, advanced legal research or advanced legal internship and seminar and legal seminar. Opportunities are available for students to work pro bono in an elder law clinic, an immigration clinic and a divorce clinic.

    Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College

    • Founded in 1840 by the Sisters of Providence, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is the oldest Catholic liberal arts college for women in the United States. Its paralegal studies program offers an associate degree, a baccalaureate degree and a post-degree certificate. All three options require law, ethics and society, legal research, legal communication, interviewing and investigation, computers in the law, theories of liability, commercial transactions, civil litigation, advanced legal research and writing and legal practicum. It also offers a minor in paralegal studies.
