Decide which test you are interested in taking. The ASE offers more than just certification for just technicians. There are tests that apply to all jobs related to the Automotive Industry. Here are the possible tests:

Register online for the test that you have decided to take. See Resources for website information.
Order the Official ASE Catalog of Tests for the test you plan to take. These catalogs are free and you can order yours by calling 1-888-ASE-TEST. You are given the option of requesting a paper or CD-ROM version. The documents you receive include the specifications and tasks for each test. If you are planning on taking the L1 or L2 test, you should also study the Composite Vehicle Reference Booklet.
Study the content that is listed in the Test Specification, making sure that you not the areas that have more questions on the test. Read the Task List and take notes on the areas that your skills that are your strengths and weaknesses.
Watch examples and take sample tests on the ASE website. These tests were created to practice navigating the controls of a computer-based test. See Resources for a link to samples online. Review all of the sample questions that are included. The exact questions will not appear in the test but they are similar in difficulty and style to the real test questions.
