How to Prepare My Internship Report for Counseling Psychology

Bachelor's and master's degree programs in counseling psychology often require students to complete a clinical internship. Interns see clients and offer counseling services under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. Internships are a great way for students to gain practical experience and hone their clinical skills before obtaining a job.

Most programs require interns to write an internship report at the completion of the experience. Interns should document what they learned, using specific case studies or observations collected during the intership experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Before your internship begins, think about the population you will be working with and a specific problem encountered in that area of counseling. Successful internship reports approach a particular issue and document what you learned about it. Read background information about the problem and think about what interesting data or clinical observations you could contribute.

    • 2

During your internship, take careful notes about each session. At the end of each day, reflect on your experiences and jot down information that might later be useful. Document any clinical observations that surprised you or demonstrated a break-through in your technique. These observations will serve as the data from which you draw conclusions in your report.

    • 3

Write the introduction to your internship report. This should include a thorough review of existing literature pertinent to your topic. Clearly state the clinical question that interested you, explaining why it is novel and important.

    • 4

Describe your data, which will likely be specific case reports. De-identify confidential information to protect the privacy of your clients. Describe the clients' personal and mental health statuses. Detail all information relevant to your topic of interest.

    • 5

Draw specific conclusions about what you learned during your internship experience. Support these statements with examples from your clinical observations and case reports. Present a persuasive argument detailing what you learned, why it is important and how the internship impacted your growth as a counselor.
