Candidates for a D.Min. must already have a master of divinity degree (M.Div.) from an accredited school. They must be actively involved in professional ministry, and are usually required to have at least three years of experience, as well as a good academic record.
Different doctor of ministry programs offer various tracks candidates can focus on, including theological hermeneutics, leadership, pastoral skills, Bible translation, worship, discipleship, urban ministry, church and culture, spiritual formation, marriage and family counseling and preaching.
Because the doctor of ministry degree is for working professionals, the classroom component is usually designed around one- to two-week intensive residencies. Students complete projects, take oral exams and write a doctoral thesis all while continuing their everyday ministry. Most doctor of ministry programs provide significant mentorship and advisor guidance.
