Colleges With Defense Engineering

Engineering is a broad area of study at colleges and universities around the world. There are many different types of engineers. Variations of the degree include mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering. A much less common area of engineering expertise, however, is defense engineering. Students who study this field are trained to develop products for the armed forces.
  1. Lawrence Technological University

    • Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan offers a graduate degree program in manufacturing systems for the defense industry. The program is targeted toward displaced automotive engineers who are looking to broaden their skill sets in a different industry. Students learn about defense acquisition systems, how to develop contracts for the U.S. Department Of Defense and strategic planning. Students need 15 credit hours to earn the certificate. Credits can also be applied toward a Master of Engineering in Manufacturing Systems degree.

    Wayne State University

    • Wayne State University, based in Detroit, Michigan, offers a Master of Science degree with a concentration in defense engineering. Students learn about integrated systems engineering, defense engineering requirements as well as fundamental engineering principles. Wayne State has connections with the U.S. Army's Tank Automotive and Armament Command and Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center, located in nearby Warren, Michigan. This connects students with hands-on training and also opens the door for job opportunities following graduation.

University of California at San Diego Extension

    • The University of California at San Diego Extension offers six defense engineering application classes as part of its overall continuing engineering curriculum. Class topics include Spatial Analysis, Introduction to Human Systems Integration, Logistics Overview and Supply and Provisioning. Because the program is part of an extension university, the classes are offered as a way of broadening engineering knowledge through continuing education. Upon completion of each course, participants receive a certificate.

    Defence Engineering College

    • The Ethiopia-based Defence Engineering College (DEC) was established in 1997 specifically to develop products for the Ethiopian military. The DEC offers programming in electronics, aeronautics and automobile engineering, but with an added focus on the defense industry and its technologies. Students can work to earn either undergraduate or graduate degrees at the college and take part in defense research as part of the college's curriculum.
