A master of business administration (MBA) is probably the highest sought-after degree for business majors. It is also the most valuable of the business degrees because of its stature among companies in varying industries. The world today is moving toward an increasingly corporate and service-oriented economy, so employers are constantly seeking employees with an MBA to fill their upper-management positions. Employers often no longer consider a bachelor's in business sufficient for sought-after positions.
A degree in finance, either a bachelor's or a master's, is required to work as a financial analyst, consultant, Wall Street broker, and a number of other high-profile positions. This degree provides students with an understanding of business, economics and statistics. Moreover, expert knowledge in budgeting, accounting and financial analysis is gained. Positions in finance are expected to grow faster, on average, than any other occupation. Obtaining an MBA with a concentration in finance, or a master's degree in finance, can put students ahead of the pack in securing any position within the field.
While similar to finance, accounting degree programs focus almost entirely on the accounting aspects of the field. A background in business and finance is acquired through the program, but the focus is on financial planning, financial instruments, tax laws and accounting principles. While a bachelor's degree in accounting is certainly desirable in the field, a master's degree in accounting, an MBA with a concentration in accounting and/or a CPA (certified personal accountant) certificate are more in demand. Changes in the corporate world have made management-level positions in accounting indispensable.
A degree in marketing usually includes a background in sales, advertising or public relations. Marketing and sales have been important aspects of business for a long time and are instrumental in garnering the attention of target audiences, as well as obtaining their business. While the field of marketing is rather expansive, including global marketing and marketing research, a degree in marketing can help a student obtain highly sought-after positions. Managerial positions in the field are expected to grow about as fast as the average occupation, but competition for those positions is fierce. Obtaining a master's degree in marketing or sales, or an MBA in marketing or sales, can help students get a leg up on those with only a bachelor's degree.
