How to Write a System of Inequalities

An inequality is a mathematical expression that has a range of answers that are either greater than (>) or less than (<) a given value; equations can also be greater than or equal to (or less than or equal to) than the value. A system of inequalities is simply a set of more than one inequality expression; they do not necessarily have any relationship with one another. Thus, writing a system of inequalities is as simple as writing multiple inequality expressions.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the value for the first notation in the inequality (referred to as "a"). Notations can be a single number, or they can have multiple parts (e.g. 3x + 2y).

    • 2

Write the value for the second part of the inequality ("b"). Again, there is no restriction on the expression of this value.

    • 3

Add an inequality symbol to the expression. These are greater than (a>b), less than (a<b), greater than or equal to (a>=b) and less than or equal to (a<=b).

    • 4

Write at least one more inequality statement in order to create a system of inequalities. There is no maximum on the number of inequalities in a system of inequalities.
