How to Calculate Grades With Assignments as a Percentage of the Grade

Knowing how to calculate your own grades is important for several reasons. One, it lets you catch a teacher's mistake. Two, it lets you prepare yourself for the final grade. Additionally, some classes are structured so you don't have to take a final if your grade is high enough. A common way teachers keep grades is by having each assignment be a percentage of the overall grade. This is also one of the easiest ways to figure out your grade.

Instructions

    • 1

Find out what percentage of the grade each assignment is by asking the teacher. Larger assignments, such as tests, are likely to weigh more than smaller assignments, like homework.

    • 2

Multiply the grade you got on the assignment by its percentage. For example, if you got an 88 on an assignment that is worth 50% of your grade, you would multiply 88 by .5 to get 44.

    • 3

Add up all the values of the individual assignments to get your grade. Remember, your grade will appear low if you still have more assignments left. That's because the percentages do not yet add up to 100.

    • 4

Convert your grade to a grade point average (GPA) or a letter grade, depending on the system that your school uses.
