How to Write a Synopsis About a Child With Behavioral Problems for Graduate School

A Behavior Intervention Plan is a brief synopsis of a child with behavior problems. The plan includes identification of what may be causing the behavior and a plan for teaching the child acceptable forms of communication, behavior, and coping strategies. It should address interventions which will be used to eliminate the behavior. Practice in writing a behavior will be helpful when you are called upon to do so for a student in your class.

Instructions

    • 1

Observe the student and the problem behaviors in the typical environment. Look for the antecedent, or cause, for the behavior. Also, examine the situation for any consequences that result from the behavior.

    • 2

Collect data to determine how severe the behavior is and to base your report findings upon. It will provide a basis for your recommendations.

    • 3

Prepare a simple cover page that identifies the student, date of report, grade level, and team members that worked on the report.

    • 4

Write a short paragraph describing the behavior and identifying the possible triggers for the behavior. Identify the consequences of the behavior, such as disrupting instruction, escaping work, or gaining classmates' attention.

    • 5

Identify prevention strategies and recommend possible replacement behaviors that the classroom teacher and members of the behavior team will teach the student. Write a recommendation for how the student's proper behavior might be reinforced.

    • 6

Write a paragraph about possible long-term behavior management strategies to implement until the behavior is eliminated.
