In 1890, Thomas Foster realized that some people who didn't have easy access to advanced education needed a way to learn advanced skills. He developed the distance learning system as a way of helping others qualify for job promotions or learn a trade. The school immediately became successful and as of 2010, more than 13 million students have enrolled in Penn Foster programs.
According to the Penn Foster, practicums allow students to experience first-hand skills and knowledge necessary for their chosen course. Students perform work-related functions, demonstrate competencies and learn how to be a part of a working team.
Students enrolled in the veterinary technician course will complete two, nine-week practicums at a veterinary clinic. Those enrolled in the health information technology program will gain work place experience in a variety of settings, supervised by medical professionals. The optician degree requires students to complete a six-month (120 hour) practicum under the direct supervision of a certified optician.
Students are advised to locate a clinical site within their area to complete the practicum. To avoid complications, Penn Foster strongly recommends students locate a clinical site before enrolling in the course.
