The College of Letters and Sciences provides undergraduate and graduate study programs. Students can choose from 109 majors in areas of liberal arts and sciences. The College of Letters and Sciences has 34 departments and 40 specialized programs. Graduate students can pursue both teaching and research opportunities.
The 11 professional programs offered by UCLA include art and architecture, education and information, engineering and applied science, law, management, public affairs, theater and film, nursing, dentistry and public health.
UCLA has a vibrant athletic program with competitive teams in all major sports including volleyball, gymnastics, basketball, tennis, soccer, softball, swimming, water polo and golf. Most sports have teams for both men and women. Since its inception, UCLA sports teams have placed first in the NCAA 104 times.
The UCLA campus, located in Westwood in Los Angeles, occupies 419 acres with more than 235 buildings in different architectural styles. The campus has buildings where students can gather to eat and socialize, buildings that house educational departments and professional schools, dormitories and a number of open spaces that students can enjoy. Of particular note are the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, which is home to more than 70 master-level sculptures; Royce Hall, which is modeled after an Italian basilica and homes an antique pipe organ; and the Powell Library, which is one of the original four buildings on the campus.
In 2009, 55,708 people applied to UCLA; 12,179 were accepted and 4,472 enrolled. Among enrollees, the average grade point average during high school was 3.79. Enrollees also average a combined score of 1900 out of 2100 on three standardized academic tests.
