Schools for Plastic Surgeons

Some may think plastic surgery only involves cosmetic procedures such as rhinoplasty or breast augmentation but plastic surgery actually encompasses a number of procedures not limited to aesthetics. Learning a wide variety of reconstructive surgical skills is a large part of the training process, and choosing a hospital school residency program that offers the specialty is the first place prospective plastic surgeons begin.
  1. Harvard University Surgery Education Office

    • Medical students completing their residency through Harvard University have the opportunity to take advantage of the Combined Plastic Surgery Residency Training Program. Residents rotate throughout five area hospitals: the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Children's Hospital Boston, the Shriners Burns Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. Attending surgeons teach residents the skills necessary to perform procedures such as wound healing, microsurgery, craniofacial abnormalities, reconstruction techniques and body contouring.

In addition to classroom instruction, residents are required to complete at least one scholarly or research activity per year with their supervising surgeons. The program requires three years to complete.

    University of California, Los Angeles

    • The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) offers both a traditional residency program in plastic surgery and two fellowship programs for surgeons looking to continue their studies in the fields of craniofacial surgery and microvascular surgery. Residents learn skills in a wide variety of surgical options including: reconstruction, skin grafts, transferring tissue and cosmetic procedures.

An added value of the UCLA resident program is the opportunity to practice in the resident clinic. The clinic allows patients to receive low-cost surgeries performed by residents under the direct supervision of attending physicians. Residents are only allowed to operate through the clinic in their final stages of residency.

    University of Florida

    • The University of Florida Department of Surgery accepts one resident per year into its Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency program. Residents spend three years working with plastic surgeons, rotating between the Shands Hospital and the Gainesville Veterans Hospital. At times, out of area rotations are available for specific purposes. Training is provided in all areas of plastic surgery, including congenital abnormalities, facial trauma, laser procedures, treatment and reconstruction due to head and neck cancer and lower extremity defects.

The plastic surgery residents and surgeons also work with the departments of orthopedics, oral surgery and otolaryngology. For three years residents are required to participate in at least one research project with attending surgeons per year.
