Medical students completing their residency through Harvard University have the opportunity to take advantage of the Combined Plastic Surgery Residency Training Program. Residents rotate throughout five area hospitals: the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Children's Hospital Boston, the Shriners Burns Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. Attending surgeons teach residents the skills necessary to perform procedures such as wound healing, microsurgery, craniofacial abnormalities, reconstruction techniques and body contouring.
In addition to classroom instruction, residents are required to complete at least one scholarly or research activity per year with their supervising surgeons. The program requires three years to complete.

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) offers both a traditional residency program in plastic surgery and two fellowship programs for surgeons looking to continue their studies in the fields of craniofacial surgery and microvascular surgery. Residents learn skills in a wide variety of surgical options including: reconstruction, skin grafts, transferring tissue and cosmetic procedures.
An added value of the UCLA resident program is the opportunity to practice in the resident clinic. The clinic allows patients to receive low-cost surgeries performed by residents under the direct supervision of attending physicians. Residents are only allowed to operate through the clinic in their final stages of residency.
