Advanced specialist training is available to postgraduate medical students in Singapore and is provided by the Joint Committee on Specialist Training (JCST). Advanced specialty training is available to individuals who have obtained a MMed and wish to specialize in a particular field of medicine, such as diagnostic radiology, ophthalmology, psychiatry and anesthesiology. In total, there are 35 specialty training programs available.
Advanced specialty training is three to four years in length, depending on the individual's chosen specialty. Throughout the training program, student doctors participate in grand rounds, case reviews, research seminars and journal clubs, in addition to practical experience with patients. Students are also expected to participate heavily in research activities within their specialty during the program.
Prior to completing the training, final year students are evaluated through clinical observation and oral examination. Successful candidates are awarded a Fellowship of the Academy of Medicine (FAMS) and are eligible for registration with Singapore's Specialist Accreditation Board.
