How to Transfer a Medical School Transcript

Students in medical school may need copies of their medical school transcripts if they transfer to a different school or when they apply for special programs such as fellowships and residencies. After graduation, higher education institutions typically require medical school transcripts, as do most employers. Many applications for schools, programs and jobs initially allow for unofficial transcripts, which may be simply photocopies of the original. They eventually require official transcripts, however, which must usually come directly from the medical school.

Instructions

    • 1

Find out what kind of transcript you need. If an unofficial transcript will suffice, you just need to make a photocopy of the most recent transcript. If you are transferring to a different medical school, you will need an official transcript.

    • 2

Contact the registrar's office at your medical school for an official transcript. The school website may have a link to order transcripts online or have a form you need to download, fill out and mail or deliver.

    • 3

Include required fees. Most schools charge for official transcripts ranging from $5-15 for each copy.

    • 4

Request plain paper background if you ask for a transcript transfer to Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), the international program for medical school residency programs. ERAS sends documents electronically, so transcripts must be easy to read. It also must be in English or accompanied by an English translation certified by a government or medical school official or an approved translation service.
