* Common Majors

Medical Degree (4 Years)
* Earn an M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) or D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) degree from an accredited medical school.
* Complete required courses in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, medical ethics, and clinical medicine.
* Participate in clinical rotations in various medical specialties, including psychiatry.
Psychiatry Residency (4 Years)
* Complete a psychiatry residency program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
* Learn to diagnose and treat mental illness, prescribe medication, and provide psychotherapy.
* Gain experience working with patients of all ages and backgrounds.
Board Certification
* After completing residency, take and pass the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) certification exam.
* Maintain board certification by meeting continuing medical education (CME) requirements.
