In the United States, the title of "MD" (Doctor of Medicine) is a protected title and can only be used by individuals who have earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited medical school and have met all other state licensing requirements. Individuals who have earned an international medical degree that is equivalent to a Doctor of Medicine degree but do not hold a Doctor of Medicine degree are not permitted to use the title of "MD."
However, individuals who are board certified and licensed may use the title "DO" (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) if they have completed a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree and met all state licensing requirements. Additionally, individuals who are board certified and licensed may also use other appropriate titles such as "Physicians Assistant," "Nurse Practitioner," or "Chiropractor," depending on their qualifications.
