How to Earn an Athletic Trainer's Degree

The allied health, sports rehabilitation and sports training fields are among the fastest growing in the nation. A degree in athletic training can get you working with athletes in preventive care or rehabilitation in a variety of settings. Certification as an athletic trainer can be obtained through a bachelor's or master's program, depending on which institution you choose to attend.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide where you want to go to school to pursue your education in athletic training. Find out what schools offer a bachelor's or master's degree in athletic training and which ones have good relations with athletic trainers and other sports organizations, so you can get a job more easily when you're out of school.

    • 2

Complete your general education courses and any prerequisite classes you need to get into the athletic training program. Usually you will need to observe a licensed Athletic Trainer for a set number of hours to get a feel for the job, then be admitted to the program once that is completed.

    • 3

Take the required courses and finish with grades that are high enough for the program's standards. Most will not let you pass a class with anything lower than a C, and most athletic training programs will only allow a certain number of credit hours with a C before putting you on academic probation or making you retake the course.

    • 4

Complete the degree program from the chosen university and receive your diploma. Take the certification exam through the National Athletic Trainers' Association. Once certified, you can take a job as an athletic trainer.
