Requirements for SCAD

With more than 80 undergraduate majors and minors and five locations in the U.S., France and Hong Kong, Savannah College of Art and Design defines itself as the most comprehensive art and design school in the world. Admission to SCAD is based on a number of factors, and admission requirements differ depending on your admission type: first-year freshmen, transfer, international, transient, graduate, non-degree-seeking, certificate or re-admission.
  1. Application

    • SCAD requires a completed application from all students seeking admission to the college. The application must be accompanied by an application fee. In 2010, SCAD accepted paper applications, though the application fee was double the fee charged for submitting an electronic application. Though not often, SCAD sometimes designates days for prospective students to apply without an application fee. Contact Admission for more information:

    High School Diploma or Equivalent

    • First-year students must furnish an official high school transcript. Home-schooled students should submit a corresponding transcript and may present a portfolio. International applicants should submit transcripts indicating completion of high school or equivalency. SCAD requests all transcripts be written in English or accompanied by a certified English translation. Transfer students do not need to present high school records but must request official transcripts from each college or university previously attended.

    SAT or ACT Scores

    • First-year freshmen applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents must also submit official SAT or ACT scores. SCAD's SAT code is 5631 and ACT code is 0855. As of 2010, students applying for admission to the architecture program must score at least a 540 on the math section of the SAT or a 23 on the ACT to be accepted without provisions.

Students whose first language is any other than English must demonstrate proficiency in English.

    Supplementary Materials

    • Though not required for all programs, supplementary materials improve any student's candidacy for admission and can set you apart in a large pool of applicants. According to SCAD Admission, "All applicants may submit supplementary materials to enhance their admission files and to be considered for an artistic scholarship. "If your high school grade point average falls below 3.0, or if you scored below 1000 on the SAT or 21 on the ACT, you should especially consider submitting a portfolio and other supplementary materials.

Aside from preparing a portfolio, audition or writing sample for review, prospective students can also submit three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, a résumé and a list of achievements or awards. Candidates for admission can contact the Admission Department to request and schedule a telephone interview.

If possible, you should attend a SCAD Days session or other admission event in your geographic area for portfolio counseling, information on admission, financial aid and scholarships, and opportunities to meet SCAD students, faculty and staff.
