How to Write a University Cover Letter

While not all universities require a resume and cover letter, submitting both along with your application can give you an edge. A well-crafted letter shows the admissions board that you are a responsible student who is taking seriously the goal of getting into the college of your choice.

The cover letter is important. It serves as your introduction to the university admissions board, and the letter's content, language and tone will make your first impression.

Instructions

    • 1

List the information you wish to include in your cover letter. Though you should mention a few of your strong points, the cover letter needs to convey more than this. The cover letter should be tailored specifically to one university. Include two or three statements about why you feel this is the school for you. If you are applying for a research position, point out why your project is the best fit for this particular university.

    • 2

Open a new document and create a header that includes your name and contact information. Center the header and use Times New Roman or Courier font in 10- or 12-point size, except your name may be in 20-point type. Set the document to left-justified and type the name of the recipient of your letter, his title (such as registrar or dean) and the university mailing address.

    • 3

Type an introductory paragraph, addressing the recipient by name ("Dear Mr. Black"). This paragraph should explain who you are, what education you have completed, what you are pursuing and why you believe you would be a valuable addition to the university.

    • 4

Type the body of the letter, which can be three to five paragraphs long. Keep your cover letter to one or two pages. Elaborate on the points you listed in Step 1, and use persuasive language in the active voice. Focus on why you will be an asset as a student rather than on how a degree from the university will benefit you.

    • 5

Type a closing paragraph and refer to the next step in the admissions process. You could say that you will call to set up an admissions interview or ask that you be contacted for further consideration. Thank the recipient for his time and for considering you as a student.
