Common Application Recommendations

The Common Application provides students with the opportunity to complete one standardized application for all colleges that have signed up to use the program. Students may complete the application online or on paper and may use it to apply to over 400 member colleges and universities. The application consists of school records, personal information as well as a short answer and essay question. While the application is fairly straightforward, there are several recommendations that may help with the process.
  1. Allow Ample Time

    • The common application is extensive, covering a range of topics and consisting of five printed pages for the 2010 to 2011 application year. Though the length of time it takes each student to complete the application varies, begin working on the application well before it must be submitted to ensure you are able to gather all necessary information, such as test scores, class rank and family information. You may stop working on the application at any time, whether completing the application online or on paper, and continue the process when you are ready. If using the computer application, you must save your work before exiting the application.

    Provide Detailed Information

    • Providing accurate, detailed information on your application allows schools to get a greater understanding of who you are as a person and a student. Offer as much information about yourself and your family as possible. Detail your academic standing and test scores. If you are unsure of your scores or standing, request the information from your guidance counselor. List all of your extracurricular activities, including school clubs, sports, volunteering and paid work in their order of importance. Attach a resume and provide information that you feel is important but not listed on the application.

    Essay Recommendations

    • The common application offers several essay topics for you to choose from. Select a topic that you feel confident writing about and use your honest thoughts and own voice to complete the essay. Draft the essay, reread it and edit it before submitting your application. Ensure that it shows your best work, is interesting and reflects the topic. Allow your personality and experience show through and avoid writing what you think others want to hear.

    Computer Recommendations

    • If you choose to complete the application online, save your work often and remember to log out of the program after each session. As of the 2010 to 2011 application year, the Common Application notes that JavaScript and cookies must be enabled and all pop-up blockers should be disabled before beginning the application. In addition, the application should be completed in Internet Explorer 6 or above, Firefox 3 or higher or Safari 2.1 or above. Students using Google Chrome or an AOL browser may experience difficulty with the application program.
