College Alumni Interview Tips

As part of the college application process, applicants may be asked to take part in an alumni interview. During this process, a member of the college alumni interviews the prospective student to see if she will fit in with the college on an academic and social level. Applicants can win an alumnus over by displaying confidence, professionalism and passion.
  1. Be Prepared

    • It is important for applicants to prepare themselves properly for an alumni interview so they are not rendered speechless by an interviewer's question. Read about the history, mission and philosophy of the college to which you're applying. Decide what aspects of the college make you want to go there and be prepared to discuss them during the interview. Know your own achievements. Bring your resume with you so that you can refer to your experiences and accomplishments when asked.

    Be Confident

    • Display confidence throughout the interview, beginning with a firm handshake and a smile. Remember you are there to sell yourself. Don't be afraid to discuss your accomplishments in detail; however, avoid using language that makes you appear arrogant. Use eye contact throughout the interview to show the interviewer that you are not intimidated by post-high school academic and professional settings. Don't allow the interviewer to make you feel rushed. Take your time to think about a question and answer it as thoughtfully as possible. This will show you to be genuine and prove to the interviewer that you're worthy of his time.

    Be Passionate

    • When asked why you want to attend the college, center your answers around your particular passion in regard to academia as well as the greater global community. Explain to the interviewer how you will use your college education to make a difference in the world. Prove that you are both interesting and interested by discussing what you already know and what you cannot wait to learn more about. Discuss why that particular college will fulfill your passions more than any other college. Remember that as an alumnus the interviewer will likely appreciate your admiration of his alma mater.

    Be Memorable

    • Insert interesting and unique comments into the interview that the interviewer can remember you by. For example, use a quote from your favorite author as part of an answer to a question asked by the interviewer. If an appropriate opportunity arises to make a clever joke, then do so. Don't be afraid to show wit and conviviality, as the interviewer will want to know you're a real person that will fit into the college's social scene. Remain professional but be genuine at the same time.
