Preparatory Classes & Materials for the SAT Exam

Preparing for the SAT exam requires hours of practice and instruction. You can purchase SAT study materials to assist you with subject material and test-taking strategies. There are also instructional courses (on site and online) and private tutoring available to provide you with more professional instruction and oversight.
  1. Kaplan

    • Kaplan publishes SAT preparatory materials and offers preparatory instruction on site, online and through private tutoring. The two general SAT preparatory study books produced by Kaplan are "SAT 2011" and "SAT 2011 Premier with CD ROM." The company also produces books designed for special instruction in math, writing, vocabulary or other parts of the test. You also can purchase "Kaplan 12 Practice Tests for the SAT" to prepare with exams that have been administered in recent years. Kaplan preparatory instruction on site offers three-hour comprehensive sessions of guided group work, independent practice and proctored practice exams. Instructors provide students with individualized feedback. Online classes also offer three-hour class sessions and full-length proctored exams, but students do not get one-on-one attention. Kaplan also offers private tutoring from trained and qualified instructors. In some areas, Kaplan offers free SAT informational programs for parents and students.

    College Board

    • College Board offers materials and online instruction for SAT preparation. The main SAT-prep publication of the College Board is "The Official SAT Study Guide: Second Edition." The College Board offers free assistance to users who enroll to have a daily SAT question emailed to them. You also can take a full-length SAT practice exam for free on the College Board website. For more in-depth preparation, you can sign up for an online course that includes 18 interactive preparatory lessons, 10 online practice tests and personalized essay scoring.

    Barron's SAT Test Prep

    • Barron's SAT prep course is an affordable, online course that provides students with general instruction, tactical strategies and study methods. The course also provides students access to full-length practice tests that have been used as past SAT exams. Using Barron's SAT Test Prep, students can customize their study preparation based on their performance on a practice exam. Students receive instant results and evaluations that highlight areas of weakness. The primary publication is "Barron's How to Prepare for the Sat I," although other books are available that target certain subject areas of the SAT.

    The Princeton Review

    • The Princeton Review, similar to Kaplan, offers students traditional classroom courses, online courses and private tutoring. But one of the distinguishing features of The Princeton Review classroom preparatory courses is the option to enroll in a small or large class. The smaller class size allows the instructor to provide students with more individualized attention. It is more expensive than the larger class but less expensive than private tutoring. All SAT preparatory classes (both on site and online) use past exams and real SAT questions to help students prepare. These courses teach students subject material and testing strategies and techniques. The Princeton Review also offers free strategy sessions for parents and students. The main SAT preparatory publication of The Princeton Review is "Cracking the SAT: 2011 Edition." You also can purchase books for special instruction and practice in vocabulary, math, reading and writing.
