Seminary PhD Programs

Seminary Ph.D. programs can cover a wide variety of research emphases. Seminaries differ from typical graduate schools in that they are generally tied to the larger theological vision of the school or a particular statement of faith. Ph.D. degrees offered vary by discipline and usually include topics such as theology, biblical studies or religious history.
  1. Baptist Bible Seminary

    • Baptist Bible College and Seminary (BBS) in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, is regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The seminary was founded in 1932 in Johnson City, New York and moved to its present location in 1972. The seminary and college enrolls approximately 1,000 students annually. The Ph.D. offered through the seminary is in the field of biblical studies. One of the hallmarks of the Ph.D. program at BBS is that its focus is both on scholarship and church ministry. The delivery of the Ph.D. curriculum is conducted online and in on-campus week-long modules. Students that matriculate into the program are required to have a reading knowledge of the Greek and Hebrew languages and must agree to the school's doctrinal statement of faith.

    Fuller Theological Seminary

    • Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, is among the most well-known seminaries in America. Fuller is a multidenominational seminary that enrolls approximately 4,000 students annually. Although not tied to any particular denomination, Fuller is known for its evangelical emphasis. Aside from its theological studies programs, Fuller also offers graduate degrees in both psychology and intercultural studies. The Ph.D. offered by the seminary has several possible areas of concentration: Old Testament, New Testament, worship and culture, church history, theology and culture, theology and historical theology, practical theology, Christian ethics, philosophical theology and philosophy of religion.

    Dallas Theological Seminary

    • Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS), founded in 1927, is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. DTS is known for its conservative approach to religion and biblical studies. As a seminary founded in this conservative Christian theological tradition, DTS places the Bible at the center of its curriculum. The seminary enrolls approximately 2,000 students annually and offers a number of different graduate degree programs. The Ph.D. offered at DTS has four primary areas of concentration: New Testament, Old Testament, theological studies and biblical exposition. The program requires a working knowledge of the biblical languages and eventual proficiency in at least one modern language related to their course of study.
