Columbia University's program in Japanese has existed since the late 1920s. Beginner students can take elementary Japanese classes. Advanced students can take courses that focus on Japanese reading and advanced research. The faculty is composed of eight lecturers, all of whom are native Japanese speakers. Students who want to learn how to teach Japanese to others can enroll in a master's degree program. The department sponsors Japanese related events throughout the year on campus, as well as study abroad opportunities for those who want to immerse themselves in the language and culture of Japan.
