Long Distance Nursing Degrees

Long-distance nursing degrees and courses have increased in popularity since they became offered via the Internet. These online programs offer students the opportunity to pursue their studies from anywhere they desire while keeping up with obligations such as work and family life. With the expected increase in the number of nursing jobs over the next several years (22 percent through 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), a distance education degree in nursing provides the perfect opportunity to break into this expanding job market.
  1. University of Wyoming

    • One school offering a long-distance nursing degree option is the University of Wyoming (UW). The University of Wyoming has emerged as one of the leaders in distance education among American universities. One major appeal of the UW distance education program, aside from the variety of programs offered, is the fact that non-resident students pay the same tuition rate that Wyoming residents pay. This makes the program affordable for students nationwide.

In the field of nursing, UW offers three different options for nursing students. Registered nurses needing to complete a bachelor's degree can do so through UW's RN to BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) degree program. Other students can simply take the accelerated BSN program. Both of these programs cover topics of study such as neonatal nursing, women's health and aging, cultural diversity in health care, mental health care nursing, lifespan development and several other areas of concentration. In addition to the BSN programs, the university offers a master's degree program in nurse education. All UW nursing programs are offered in an online format and have no residency requirements.

    University of Alabama-Birmingham

    • The University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) is nationally recognized as a highly rated school of nursing. In 2007, the last year that "U.S. News & World Report" ranked nursing schools, UAB was ranked as a top-30 nursing program. The university offers hundreds of its nursing courses in an online distance education format. Degrees are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate degree levels, including both the DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) and PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees. UAB is known for its specializations in areas of nursing such as neonatal nursing and gerontological nursing.

    Drexel University

    • A third option in long-distance nursing is the Drexel University nursing program in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Drexel, like the University of Wyoming, is emerging as a leader in distance education due to the sheer breadth of the programs it offers. Drexel University offers both bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing. Like the program at UW, Drexel offers a degree completion program for registered nurses already working in the field. Areas of specialization offered include nursing education, nursing leadership, acute care and women's health.
