Develop a scale with which to rate yourself or your respondents. For example, on a scale of 1 to 4, the ratings can be as follows: 1=area of future growth, 2=demonstrates emerging skill, 3=demonstrates skill consistently, 4=demonstrates advanced accomplishment.
Measure multicultural competencies by looking at specific factors such as cultural empathy, open-mindedness, emotional stability, social initiative and flexibility. Multicultural competencies consist of the proper awareness, knowledge and skills.
Familiarize yourself with cultures that differ from your own with which you have extensive contact. Ask questions, take seminars and gather information that will enhance your understanding of that group or culture.
Check your perceptions with strangers to see if these perceptions are accurate instead of assuming that you know what they mean. Describe the person's behavior and how you interpreted the behavior. Ask her if your perceptions are on the mark or not.
Listen and respond to the significance of another person's concerns and experiences. See to it that you provide a respectful environment where problems can be resolved.
