College of the Redwoods is part of the Redwoods Community College District and offers associate's degree and certificate programs, lower-division general education core curriculum courses that transfer to four-year colleges and universities and professional and technical programs to help advance career standings and prepare for new occupations. Although anyone aged 18 and older can attend this community college, prospective students must submit an application and meet prerequisite qualifications for certain courses in areas such as science and agriculture. College of the Redwoods also offers adult education programs, recreational and professional development classes and cultural and community courses.

Humboldt State University is located seven miles north of Eureka in the city of Arcata, Calif. Humboldt State is a four-year public college that is part of the California State University system. The university, founded in 1913, offers 47 degree majors, 80 minors, 12 graduate programs, 21 credential programs and several occupational certificates. The school's total student enrollment in the fall of 2008 was 7,800 students. The reported student-to-faculty ratio during 2008 was 21-to-1, which provides a unique college setting where students can get to know their professors and vice versa.
Humboldt State is renowned for educational programs in biology, elementary education, nursing and wildlife. There are three main academic divisions within the college: the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, which includes majors such as art and English; the College of Professional Studies, which is for students majoring in areas such as business and health care; and the College of Natural Resources & Sciences, which is for those selecting majors such as biology and forestry. Frederick and Charles Beauty College is a private occupational college in downtown Eureka that prepares students for careers as cosmetologists, estheticians and manicurists. Students wishing to train as cosmetologists can enroll in the General Cosmetology Program, which provides instruction in areas such as hair styling, cutting, coloring, makeup and manicures. Those students who wish to focus solely on manicuring can enroll in the Nail Technician Program and receive instruction in nail shaping and cosmetic application as well as receive instruction in manicuring theory, skin anatomy, nail growth and nail irregularities. The schools Esthetician Program instructs students on cleansing, depilating, massaging and beautifying the human body, as well provides instruction in skin anatomy, physiology and health. This college is open to anyone who wishes to receive instruction and can afford to pay the tuition for the chosen course of study. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.
