Tips on College Students Moving Away From Home

College is a big step. For many young adults, heading off to college is a first-time experience being away from home for any extended period of time. Whether you are a student planning to go to a nearby college, or on an adventurous journey across the globe, there are a few simple tips that will help you along the way.
  1. Stay Organized

    • Your mom will not be there to pick up your dirty laundry and wash your dishes. Keep your dorm room clutter-free by specifying one day a week for cleaning. Also, organize your class schedule and coursework. Buy a planner to jot down homework assignments and special projects for each class.

    Go to Class

    • It is tempting to sleep in when there are no parents there to make sure you roll out of bed on time. Get up anyway. Going to class is vitally important to your grade and, in turn, your overall GPA. Attend all freshman orientation meetings as well to familiarize yourself with the campus and its organizations.

    Get Involved

    • The easiest way to cure homesickness or dorm room boredom is to join a club or service organization on campus. Most colleges host a variety of fraternities and sororities as well as sports teams and religious organizations. There is bound to be something that will spark your interest. Do not be afraid to introduce yourself to other people in your residence hall and invite them to join you. Also introduce yourself to all professors. Doing this will help them to remember you, and could mean the difference between an A or a B at the end of the semester.

Balance Your Diet and Stay Healthy

    • There is fried food and pizza around every corner on a college campus. Don't chance gaining the dreaded "Freshman 15" by eating everything in sight. Stick to healthy foods when visiting the cafeteria. Take a multivitamin and get plenty of sleep.
